大年初九初九又称“上九日”。
民间传说玉皇大帝姓张，叫张坚，生于正月初九日。
因为他是统领三界十方诸神以及人间万灵的最高神，
代表至高无上的“天”，
因此又称这日为“天诞节”、“天公生”。
传言天上地下的各路神仙，在这一天都要隆重庆贺，
玉皇在其诞辰日的下午回鸾返回天宫。
是时道教宫观内均要举行隆重的庆贺科仪。
他的生日，人们都会举行祭典以表庆贺，
自午夜零时起一直到当天凌晨四时，都可以听到不停地鞭炮声。
祭拜公的仪式，相当隆重，在正厅天公炉下摆设祭坛，
一般都是用长板凳或矮凳先置金纸再迭高八仙桌为「顶桌」，
桌前并系上吉祥图案的桌围，后面另设“下桌”。
“顶桌”供奉用彩色纸制成的神座(象征天公的宝座)，
前面中央为香炉，炉前有扎红纸面线三束及清茶三杯，
炉 旁为烛台；其后排列五果(柑、橘、苹果、香蕉、甘蔗等水果)、
六斋(金针、木耳、香菇、菜心、菀豆、绿豆等)祭祀玉皇大帝；
下桌供奉五牲(鸡、鸭、鱼、 卵、猪肉或猪肚、猪肝)、甜料(生仁、米枣、糕仔等)、红龟粿(像龟形，外染红色，打龟甲印，以象征人之长寿)等祭玉皇大帝的从神。
在祭拜天公之前，全家大小都得斋戒沐浴，
初九当天，更禁止家人晒衣服，尤其是女裤、内衣或倒垃圾桶，
以表 示对玉皇大帝的尊敬；祭品如果要用牲畜的，一定要用公鸡、不能用母鸡。
若是要还愿时，必须用全猪或全羊。
有些虔诚的家庭以为在家里祭拜还嫌不足，
会连夜赶 往各地的天公庙礼敬，
像台南终义路的天坛、高雄的天公坛、木栅指南宫等，
每年的农历大年初八便灯火通明，热闹非凡。
天公生当日也有“安太岁”的仪式，
当年生肖冲犯太岁的人便可以到庙中，
写上自己的姓名、年岁，再添一点香油钱，委由庙方负责供奉即可。
另有一个安太岁的方法：年初时在家里用平日盛米的米筒围上红色片作炉，
写上“太岁星君到此”，再每日供奉即可。
